The Start

"Moving Slimme mobiliteit en autotechniek, bijvoorbeeld ombouw naar elektrische of hybride voertuigen. Met één van de grootste havens ter wereld is de mobiliteit in Rotterdam enorm; zee- en binnenvaartschepen, goederenvervoer per spoor, vrachtwagens en het dagelijkse personenvervoer zorgen samen voor congestie en vervuiling. Op RDM Campus wordt daarom gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van intelligente, duurzame vervoersystemen."

Moving
Smart mobility and automotive, for example, conversion to electric or hybrid vehicles. With one of the largest ports of the world is enormous mobility in Rotterdam, sea and inland shipping, rail freight, passenger trucks and everyday to come up with congestion and pollution. At RDM Campus is working on the development of intelligent, sustainable transport systems.

Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij was located on Heijplaat, which is a harbour area within Rotterdam. In the building of the old dock-works is a school situated. A school that focuses on design and car techniques.
When I saw the car workshop I began to wonder if we have car museums in The Netherlands. Yes we do:
You can form your own opinion about these or the other Dutch car museums which I haven't showed you. However, there is no link seen between the building and its surroundings, nor with its interior program. Besides if we look at our neighbours with their Porsche Museum, VW Autostadt, BMW Welt or Audi Forum we might get a bit jealous.

Mercedes Benz Museum,
BMW Welt, München

It is true that the German car industry, which exceeds ours, supports all these buildings. Nevertheless, this doesn't have to prevent us embodying the history of Dutch car brands, creating a platform for the Dutch car industry and a knowledge-centre for new Dutch car designers.

Therefore the car museum will be situated next to the INNOVATION Dock of the RDM campus (see www.rdmcampus.nl). Well, it will be more than a museum, a campus building.

Ceveral architects in the past have been involved in designing cars. Not many of their designs became realised. Nevertheless I'll show some works of famous architects:
Car Design by Buckminster Fuller
Car design by Le Corbusier
Car design by Frank Lloyd Wright

At this moment I would like to walk the other way. This would be impossible since I'm not a car designer, but I do like to use some characteristics of the car within the building design. It is still not entirely clear to me what this would be. Although I do have a small feeling it has something to do with the shape and its outer material.

The coming week I'll try to figure out a link between the car and the building. Besides some 1:1000 model sculpting will begin to get a grip on the building location.
